As a parent, I now recognise that when the summer holidays come around, the days suddenly feel very long? As a child they didn't feel so long, as often my grandmother would visit us from India, and that was the time I got to do lots of crafting, sewing and learnt new skills.
So for the moment that you need something to keep the kids happily occupied without a screen in sight, here are some simple sewing crafts! Often these crafts are educational too by helping them build fine motor skills, patience, and confidence as they proudly make something with their own hands.
Whether youâve got a little one just starting to thread a needle, or a tween looking for a more mindful project, here are some easy sewing craft ideas to try this summer, including our very own Pri Pri Wreath Kit!
1. đ¸ Fabric Wreath Kits â A Colourful Starter Project
Our Pri Pri Wreath Kit is perfect for beginners. Itâs all about creativity, colour, and thereâs no tricky stitching involved. Each kit comes with pre-cut sari fabric strips (so no faffing with scissors!) and all the bits you need to make a beautiful, upcycled wreath.
Kids can mix and match the fabrics, tie them around the hoop, and even add their own little toys on like below. Itâs a wonderfully tactile activity, and theyâll love seeing their design come to life.
đ Bonus: it makes a gorgeous bedroom or playroom decoration when theyâre done!
Top Tip: Itâs great for crafty playdates too â set up a little wreath-making station in the garden and let them get stuck in with their friends.
2. đ Simple Hand-Sewn Bunting
Bunting is such a feel-good summer make â and itâs surprisingly easy! You can use fabric scraps (old clothes work brilliantly) to make colourful triangles. Kids can either glue them onto string or have a go at simple running stitches along the top.
Not only will they be super proud when you hang their handmade bunting in the garden or across their room, but itâs also a lovely way to introduce them to basic stitching.Â
Alternatively, you can buy some ready made bunting and add your own take to it with buttons or bows!
3. 𧾠Mini Cushion Making
This is a great next step once theyâve had a little sewing practice. All you need is two squares of fabric, some stuffing (you can use fabric offcuts or old pillow stuffing), and a simple running stitch.
Let them draw their own design or initials onto the fabric with fabric pens for a personal touch. Itâs a brilliant little project that can easily be done in an afternoon.

4. đ Sari Scrap Bookmarks
If youâve got leftover fabric scraps, why not make some pretty fabric bookmarks? Simply cut a rectangle of card, glue sari fabric on both sides, and punch a hole to add a ribbon or a little fabric tassel.
Perfect for little readers, and a sweet handmade gift for teachers or friends.
